Michelle McOmber, MBA, CAE
Michelle S. McComber, MBA, CAE, has been named the Executive Vice President/CEO of the Utah Medical Association. Previously she served as UMA’s Associate Executive VP (to Val J Bateman, now retired) and Director of Government Relations and Component Services. In this role, she demonstrated exceptional efforts, talent and leadership in communicating UMA’s goals to government and influencing the outcomes of numerous initiatives.
Prior to the Utah Medical Association, she was the Director of Finance and Information Systems of the Utah Hospitals andHealth Systems Association and the Founder/Executive Vice President of the UHA Services Corporation.
She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and her MBA from Westminster College of Salt Lake City. She is also a Certified Association Executive by the American Society of Association Executives.

Mr. Sorenson received his Bachelors degree from Brigham Young University followed by an M.P.A. from the same institution. Mr. Sorenson served as the Executive Vice President of the Utah Medical Association sice 1979 and as the President of the UMA Financial Services, Inc. (UMAFS) beginning in 1993.

A. Robert Thorup, JD
ALVIN ROBERT THORUP provided important legal advice and services in connection with the founding and organization of UMA Financial Services. He has been an advisor to the Board and later a non-physician member of the Board since its first meeting in 1993. Mr. Thorup currently acts as Deputy City Attorney for the City of West Jordan, Utah.
Previously, Mr. Thorup was a lawyer in private practice. From 1979 to 2006 he was an associate and partner at Ray Quinney & Nebeker in Salt Lake City. For eighteen months following his retirement from Ray Quinney, Mr. Thorup offered part-time general counsel services to small and medium size companies through his Salt Lake City-based company, My Legal Counsel LLC, Your General Counsel SolutionTM.
Mr. Thorup was an attorney with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Office of Administrative Law Judges, in Washington D.C. prior to returning to Salt Lake City in 1979 to join Ray Quinney & Nebeker. His private practice concentrated on administrative agency and state and federal civil litigation between 1979 and 1990; and between 1990 and 2006 Mr. Thorup focused on corporate mergers and acquisitions and federal and state securities law compliance. He was chosen as one of Utah Business Magazine’s 2007, 2008 and 2009 “Legal Elite”.
He was a primary drafter of the Utah Administrative Procedures Act. Later public service has included the Salt Lake City Capital Improvements Board and chairing the Utah State Securities Advisory Board. Mr. Thorup is the author or co-author of several law review articles and newspaper and magazine articles in the areas of administrative law, banking and securities law. His most recent publication is a book with Professor Stephen G. Wood: Utah’s Administrative Procedures Act--a 20-Year Perspective.
Mr. Thorup graduated magna cum laude in Public Administration from the University of Utah, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; and he received his law degree from the National Law Center at the George Washington University, where he was Articles Editor of the George Washington Law Review and a Trustee Scholar. In addition to his service as a director of UMA Financial Services, Inc., Mr. Thorup was a director of Crossroads Oil plc, a London, England-based public company. He is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors.
